#16 Something To Sing About from all over the Psalms

from Carole Hicks

When I sit down and just peruse through the Psalms, I find the words to so many songs that we sing in church.

See if you recognize any of these …

  • ·         My hope is in the Lord … from this time on … and evermore. O’ my hope, is in the Lord, forevermore.  (My Hope)
  • ·         I lift my eyes unto the hills, where does my help come from … My help comes from the Lord, Maker of Heaven and Earth. (Praise You In This Storm)
  • ·         Give thanks to the Lord, for He is Good … His Love Endures Forever.  (Forever)
  • ·         O God, you are my God … and I will ever praise you. O God, you are my God … and I will ever praise you. I will seek you in the morning and I will learn to walk in your ways. And step by step, you’ll lead and I will follow you all of my days. (Step by Step, Experiencing God)
  • ·         The voice of the Lord is over the waters, the voice of the Lord is shaking the earth … (The Voice of the Lord from Be Magnified)
  • ·         Open the eyes of my heart, Lord, I want to see you.

Anyway, the list could go on and on … from the classics to contemporary … the song of the heart remains the same … It’s ALL about Him and HE DESERVES our Praise … and HE INHABITS THE PRAISE OF HIS PEOPLE.

As I was looking through the Psalms, I was challenged to find a passage that had not been used and might could be used as a song of my heart.  Have you ever come across a passage in the Bible that just perfectly expressed the passion and feelings and tenderness of your heart?

You might not think you are creative … but really and truly, the psalmist has already written the words. And since we know that we have much in common with him; and we know that he shared the same emotions, and inspirations and life situations that many of us experience today — it should not be too difficult to find YOUR VERSE to a Common Bond Psalm.

If you take an old familiar tune that’s used many times to different words … such as the ABC song, which is also Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star.  Use that tune, then use the words from Psalms that sing your praise to the Lord.  It’s just between you and Him anyway.

Jack has the sweetest little voice. Christie bought him and MP3 player for Christmas and loaded it with the songs that she and he listen to when they are sportin’ about doing “sibling stuff.”  It cracks me up to hear him sing along with Michael Jackson, Bob Seger, Elton John and others.  He just mumbles through the words that he doesn’t know (thank goodness sometimes) … and when it gets to the part that he does know … HE REALLY SINGS OUT!!!   And it just makes me smile.

Well … don’t you think that God is that way too.  He doesn’t expect you to sing about things you don’t necessarily know … but for what you do know, and what you can say in PRAISE … HE LOVES TO HEAR YOU SING IT OUT!!!

So, take that little Twinkle, Twinkle tune and throw in some words  … get in your shower or your car and have a concert to the Lord.

(If you’re not too shy about sharing it … send your words to Common Bond … others might want to sing your song too.)
